Abstract

561,557. Riveting. MURRAY CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Oct. 27, 1942, Nos. 15083 and 15084. Convention dates, Oct. 6, 1941, and April 28, 1942. [Class 83 (iv)] Rivet heads are formed by driving the shank end of the rivet against a resilient bar by means such as a pneumatic hammer applied to the already formed rivet head. The resilient bar moves with a parallel motion and it is long enough to span a line of rivets so that these can be set in succession without moving the device. A casing 15, Fig. 1, held against the sheets 27, 28 to be riveted has levers 18 pivoted thereto at 21. Pivots 19 connect the axial bar 17 and pivots 23 a bar 22 engaged by a flexible sac 24 supplied with pressure fluid at 26. An adjustable stop 146 limits the approach of the bar 17 to the sheets and so determines the thickness of the heads. In a modification, the bar 17 is pivoted to bellcranks 38, Fig. 5, connected by a rod 42 adjustable in length at 44 to form parallel motion. A spring 45 engaging an adjustable abutment provides a controlled degree of resilience. The spring may be replaced by a fluid-pressure cylinder and various arrangements are illustrated. The casing may have perforated flanges to receive plate clamping pins for making a temporary attachment to the work by means of some of the rivet holes. In a further modification, the casing is replaced by lugs 99, Fig. 12, supporting the cylinder, the piston 101, attached to the rod 77 connecting bell-cranks working in slots in the anvil bar, co-operating with a fixed end 102, fluid inlet being at 103. Trunnions 104 on the lugs engage a yoke 105 in which is mounted a holding-up cylinder 109 with a piston connected to a sliding abutment block 106 abutting an adjacent member 71 of the structure being riveted. The yoke may engage trunnions' 112 on end caps of the cylinder, thus enabling the anvil bar to operate close up to a corner member. Various modifications of cylinder holding-up devices are illustrated, the pressure of which on the casing or its equivalent is greater than the pressure on the anvil bar so that the casing is held firmly against the work whilst the bar is resiliently held. A machine shown as riveting a channel to a curved sheet has a self-contained abutment frame 117, 118, Fig. 14. The casing of the anvil device 78 is mounted on the table in the gap and the piston-rod 121 of the hold-up cylinder'is fitted with a pneumatic hammer. Pressure fluid from a line 127 is controlled at 129 for admission to the anvil bar cylinder through a reducing valve 131 and pressure gauge providing visual adjustment according to the rivet size and material. A reversing valve 133 controls the hold-up cylinder and a valve 137 supplies the hammers. In another form, a foundation bar 232, Fig. 18, carries a cylinder 244, the piston-rod of which is pivotally connected to oppositely extending levers 234, 236 recessed for fulcrum balls 252 resting in recesses in the foundation bar. Similarly mounted balls 258 transmit movement to the anvil bar. Resilience is further assisted by rods 264 fitted with springs 266. A modification of this form is shown with an anvil bar curved to suit cylindrical work. For riveting angle bars an anvil bar 220, Fig. 23, is connected to a foundation bar 282 by bell-cranks 284 coupled by a rod 292 connected to a piston-rod. A number of variations are illustrated. In further forms, an anvil bar for single or multiple rivets is mounted at one end of a long base-plate with the cylinder at the opposite end for use in riveting inside lengthy tubular work. A table for use in riveting, with a number of the devices is fitted with clamps 380, Fig. 32, for the work and a series of slots 372, 374 to pass the anvil bars. The casings or foundation bars are secured in various ways to the underside of the table.
