Abstract
559,651. Root-crop harvesters. SHEPHERD, A. Aug. 14, 1942, No. 11374. [Class 6 (iii)] A machine for. harvesting root crops, particularly turnips, comprises a frame mounted on a single wheel I and carrying a topping mechanism Y guided by a member S, an inclined plate R for directing the roots against a tailing knife 1 and a horizontal roller, or belt, conveyer 13 for conveying the roots to a pair of inclined conveyer belts H from which the roots, assisted by a cleaning drum 14 with a helical blade 14a, pass to a lateral-delivery belt conveyer 15. A pivoted stop 16 is provided for regulating the point of delivery so that roots from several drills can be deposited.in a single row or the delivery side may be supported by a vehicle being loaded. The driving roller P of the belts H and the drum 14 are driven through gears N, O, J from the wheel I and the driving roller 21 of the belt 15 through skew gearing 22. The rollers 13 are driven by a chain 20 and sprockets from the roller G<SP>1</SP> of a belt H and a roller 38 through bevel gearing. The member 5 is carried by a cranked drop arm T, mounted in brackets U and having a squared portion 35 engaging a Y-shaped spring 34, so that it rides along the right-hand side of the roots in a drill and the topper Y is pivoted on a rod X carrying a spring 6 for holding the fixed knife Y' against the arm T so that it follows the member S. The movable knife Y<SP>2</SP> of the topper, Fig. 3, is closed on the knife Y<SP>1</SP> against the action of a spring 25 by a fixed cam 28 pressing cam followers 32 on a rotating plate 31 against a friction lining 27 of a collar 26 secured to the knife Y<SP>2</SP>. The topper is adjustable vertically by means of a handle 5 connected by a cable 4 to a lever 2 linked to a collar 18, resiliently mounted on the rotatable sleeve 3 and carrying the bracket for the topper. The tailing knife 1 is adjustable vertically through the cranked end of a connecting- rod 8, a link 9 and spring-pressed friction discs 11 from a handle 10. A sole plate 37 is provided.
