Abstract
559,565. Vibrometers ; balancing rotating parts ; stroboscopic devices. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and HOPKIRK, K. R. Aug. 31, 1942, No. 12262. [Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XX] In a vibrometer of the tuned reed type, tuning is effected by longitudinally compressing the reed. The device shown is clamped to the vibrating member under test so that the vibration to be measured is in the direction Y. The reed 2 is clamped at 3 and is subjected to compression by a wire 5 under the influence of a spring 8, the tension of which is variable by rotating a nut 11, which also moves pointer 13 indicating the tension on a scale 17. The frequency of the reed is also effected by a weight 24 adjustable along a scale 28. Rotation of a screw 18 by a knob 25 moves a block 20 transversely. In use, the block 20 is adjusted to indicate the mean position of the reed on a vernier scale 22. The vibrating member is started up and knob 25 is rotated until contacts 4 and 21 on the reed and the block, respectively, just make. The weight 24 and nut 11 are adjusted until the reed has a maximum amplitude, which can be ascertained from the scale 22. The frequency is obtained from a table, Fig. 2 (not shown). Contacts 4 and 21 are in circuit with a stroboscopic lamp which illuminates the instantaneous angular position of a mark on an unbalanced rotating part.
