Abstract

559,547. Actuating flexible transmission mechanism. TURTLE, R. C., REYNOLDS, D. W., and ARENS CONTROLS, Ltd. May 21, 1942, No. 6924. [Class 136 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] Consists in means for transmitting rotary motion from one shaft to another by means of two or more flexible cables guided and supported in relatively rigid casings and connected totwo or more cranks on each shaft, the disposition of the parts being such that conditions of dead centre in the drives through the respective cables occur, at different times thus providing for continuous rotation. The shafts may be parallel or at an angle to one another. The driving unit A and the driven unit B, Fig. 3, are practically identical. The unit A comprises a baseplate 1 to which is secured a bracket 2 to form a frame in which is mounted a built-up crankshaft comprising a disc secured to a driving shaft 5, a disc 6 secured to disc 4 by a crankpin 7, and a disc 8 secured to disc 6 by a crankpin 9, the crankpins being diametrically opposed. A link 13 connects pin 17 to a slipper 4 by a pin 15 on which are rollers 141 fitting a guideway 16. The slipper is connected by a rod 19, turnbuckle 21 and rod 20 to the inner flexible member, guided in a casing23 and capable of exerting pull and push. The end of the casing 23 is supported in a block 24 by a screwed bushing 25. Another link 26 connects pin 9 with a slipper 27 in a guideway 29 the slipper being connected in a manner similar to that described above to a flexible member in a casing 31 secured to block 24 by a screwed bushing 32. The other ends of the casings are secured to a block 50 on the baseplate of the driven member unit B, Fig. 3, and the flexible members are connected respectively to slippers 44 and 51 which, in turn are connected by links 43, 52 to crankpins 41, 42 on the driven member 50 all in a manner similar to that for the unit A. The shaft of the unit B may carry a gear wheel to engage another wheel on the spindle of a screwdown steam valve. The turnbuckles 21, 58 permit of the flexible members being tensioned. The link 13, Fig. 3, is at or about its dead-centre position, whereas the link 26 is in a position of maximum turning effort.
