[Class 2 (iii)] Amidine salts are made by reaction between the corresponding imino-ether base and an ammonium salt or a salt of an organic base and isolating the amidine salt of the acid. The process is applicable to the production of diamidines of the formula Am.B.X.B.Am.,where B is an aromatic nucleus, X is a direct linkage, an alkane chain of 1 to 12 members which may contain one or more O or S atoms or NH groups, or a -CR:CR<SP>1</SP>- group in which R and R<SP>1</SP> may be H, alkyl, aralkyl, or aryl groups. The imino-ether bases may be obtained from their hydrochlorides by cooling a solution of the hydrochloride in an inert solvent and adding caustic soda solution till alkaline. The hydrochloride need not be isolated even in the crude state after manufacture in known manner. Typical salts are ammonium chloride, #-hydroxy-ethane sulphonate, #-hydroxypropane sulphonate, lactate and methane sulphonate, ethylamine lactate and piperidine hydrochloride. Examples give the preparation of trans-stilbene-4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis (carbonamidine)-di-#- hydroxyethane sulphonate and -di-lactate, α, γ- diphenoxypropane-4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis (carbonamidine)- di-#-hydroxyethane sulphonate and -dimethane sulphonate, trans-α#-dimethyl- and -α-ethylstilbene-4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis (carbonamidine) dihydrochloride, trans-stilbene-4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis (N-piperidine carbonamidine) dihydrochloride and α, 8-diphenoxypentane-4, 4<SP>1</SP>-bis (carbonamidine) di-isethionate.
