Abstract

558,891. Dyeing textiles. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and MACGREGOR, J. H. June 8, 1942, No. 7769. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Substantive dyes, dyeing with. Nitrogenous textile fibres, e.g. of wool, silk, casein or nylon are treated in presence of a small amount of a free acid with an aqueous solution of cyanamide, dicyandiamide, melamine, dicyandiamidine, guanidine, biguanide or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aryl substitution product of dicyandiamidine, guanidine or biguanide and are thereafter dyed with a direct cotton dyestuff from a neutral bath. The dicyandiamidine, guanidine and biguanide and their substitution products mav be used in the form of their salts. Specified substituted dicyandiamidines are the N-methyl, N:N-dimethyl, N:N-diphenyl and tri-(#-bydroxyethyl) derivatives, specified substituted guanidines are the N:N<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl, N:N<SP>1</SP>:N<SP>11</SP>-trimethyl, mono-, di- and tri-(#- hydroxyethyl), N-monophenyl, N:N'-diphenyl, N:N<SP>1</SP>-di-o-tolyl and N:N<SP>1</SP>:N<SP>11</SP>-triphenyl derivatives (cf. Specifications 223,410 and 262,155), [both in Class 2 (iii)], and specified substituted biguanides are the N-methyl, N:N-dimethyl, N-(#-hydroxyethyl and triphenyl derivatives. Specified salts used are guanidine citrate, guanidine adipate, guanidine ethyl oxalate, guanidine octyl succinate, dicyandiamidine sulphate and #-hydroxyethyl-biguanide neutral sulphate. The process enables the production of solid shades on mixed fabrics containing a nitrogenous fibre and cellulosic fibres, animalised or not. Specified direct cotton dyes are Chlorazol black BHS, Chlorazol fast blue 3GLL, Chlorazol fast green 5GLL, Chlorazol fast orange AGS and GS, Chlorazol fast scarlet 4BS, Diphenyl brilliant blue FF and Diphenyl fast red 7BL. In examples, (1) a woollen fabric is treated for 30 minutes with a boiling aqueous solution containing guanidine octyl succinate and acetic acid, rinsed and dyed in a neutral bath with Diphenyl brilliant blue FF; (2) woollen yarn is treated for 30 minutes with a boiling aqueous solution containing guanidine adipate and acetic acid, rinsed and dyed in a neutral bath with Chlorantine fast blue 3GLL; (3) and (4), woollen yarn is treated for 30 minutes with a boiling aqueous solution containing (3) N-mono-(#-hydroxyethyl)-biguanide neutral sulphate, (4) dicyandiamidine sulphate, and acetic acid, rinsed and dyed in a neutral bath with Chlorazol fast scarlet 4BS; (5) a mixed fabric of viscose staple fibre and wool is treated for 30 minutes with a boiling aqueous solution containing guanidine octyl succinate and acetic acid, rinsed and dyed with Chlorazol black 4BHS in an aqueous bath containing sodium chloride to obtain a solid navy blue shade ; (6) and (7), a woollen fabric is treated for 30 minutes with a boiling aqueous solution containing (6) guanidine octyl succinate (cf. Specification 558,892), (7) cyanamide, and acetic acid, rinsed and dyed in a neutral bath with Diphenyl fast red 7BL. Specification 491,314 also is referred to. N-Methyl-, N:N-dimethyl and N: N-diphenyldicyandiamidines are obtained by heating cyanourea with methylamine, dimethylamine and diphenylamine respectively in alcoholic solution. Tri-(#-hydroxyethyl)-dicyandiamidine is obtained by reaction of dicyandiamidine with ethylene oxide (3 mols.). Mono- and di-(#-hydroxyethyl)-guanidines are obtained as hydrochlorides by reaction of mono- and di-ethanolamines respectively with cyanamide in presence of hydrochloric acid. Tri-(#-hydroxyethyl)-guanidine is obtained by reaction of guanidine with ethylene oxide (3 mols.). N-methyl-, N:N-dimethyl- and N-#-hydroxyethyl-biguanides are obtained by heating under pressure dicyandiamide with methylamine, dimethylamine and #-hydroxyethylamine respectively in aqueous solution containing copper sulphate. Triphenylbiguanide is obtained by heating dicyandiamide with aniline hydrochloride (3 mols.).
