Abstract

558,879. Contacting solids and gases. INTERNATIONAL CATALYTIC OIL PROCESSES CORPORATION. Sept. 15, 1941, Nos. 11803. 11804 and 11805. Convention dates, Sept. 28, 1940, Oct. 5, 1940, and Dec. 27, 1940. CA Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 27, 1942] [Classes 1 (i) and 32] [Also in Groups XII and XIII] A method of continuously circulating finely divided solids through a treating zone consists in maintaining a vertical column of the solid in a fluidized state by admixing a gas with it throughout the full length of the column, whereby fluid pressure is generated at the base of the column. The solid is discharged from the base of the column into a stream of gas passing to the treatment zone, and is subsequently separated from the gas and returned to the top of the column. The process is applicable in general to the physical or chemical treatment of solids with gases, or of gases with solids. Examples are the low temperature carbonization of coal, the production of water gas, the distillation of wood, shale, or coal, the treatment of ores, drying of solids, oxidation of gases, separation of gases by absorbents, and catalytic processes particularly the cracking and conversion of hydrocarbons. Fig. 1 illustrates an arrangement for regenerating a cracking catalyst. Regenerated catalyst is fed to the column 88 and fluidized by admission of gas at points 94-96. The catalyst is discharged into a stream of oil vapour from vaporizing coil 16 and the mixture is led by conduit 27 to a reaction chamber (not shown). Catalyst is separated from the reaction products and fed to a column similar to 88 where it is similarly fluidized and discharged into a stream of oxidizing gas which carries it by pipe 67 to regenerator 68. The catalyst is separated from the combustion product by cyclones 72, 76, 79 and electric precipitator 84 and passes to a hopper 74, which discharges it either into fluidizing column 88 for return to the cracking process or to a similar column 87, from which it is recirculated through the regenerator and optionally also through heat exchange 13 where it heats the supply of oil to the process.
