Abstract

558,707. Vitamins. NATIONAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. July 8, 1942, No. 9463. Convention date, June 18, 1941. [Class 2 (iii)] In order to remove objectionable odours and tastes from fish oils, vitamin containing material of fish or animal origin such as fish liver oils and concentrates thereof, they are heated to 100-200‹C. with crude vegetable oil. Preferably they are heated in the presence of an inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide and under reduced pressure. The treated oils have improved resistance to oxidation. In examples, crude and partially refined shark liver oil is deaerated by agitation in the presence of nitrogen at reduced pressure and at slightly elevated temperature and then further heated with wheat germ oil and soya-bean oil. The treated oils may be decolourized e.g. by means of decolouring carbon (c.f. Specification 535,014). Besides cereal oils, olive, sesame, cotton seed, palm, rice, linseed, oiticica, teaseed, perilla, alfalfa, celery seed, flax seed, ground nut, kapok, mustard seed, melon seed, tomato seed, grape seed and peach kernel oil are mentioned. Specification 558,708 also is referred to.
