[Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] Relates to the application of sewing-ribs to insoles. A composite strip to be secured to an insole comprises a strip 20 of textile fabric cut on the bias and a second strip 20 square cut, secured to the first at its central portion by two lines of stitching 24, and stiffened with thermoplastic material. A core may be enclosed in the rib-forming layer, when the margins are turned up and pressed together to form the rib. A machine for applying the strip to an insole blank comprises ploughs for raising the margins of the layer 22 and rollers for pressing them together, these margins having been previously cemented, feeding means for the strip and the insole and a three position gauge for determining the distance between the rib and the insole margin at the fore portion and at the inside and outside of the waist. A suitable machine for applying a composite strip to an insole comprises a reel for holding a length of strip with the upper layer 22 lying flat on the lower layer, a guide reel 42 and a guide 62. through which the strip is threaded with the margins of the upper layer bent upwardly. Ploughs 68, 70 turn up these margins as the strip is fed to rolls 82, 84 which press the previously cemented margins together. The rolls are driven by a pawl and ratchet gear actuated by a link 132 adjustably pivoted to an arm on a rock-shaft 142 swung by an arm 148 secured to an eccentric strap actuated by a driven shaft 152. The margins of the lower strip 20 are threaded between feeding fingers 196, 198 and an apertured bottom plate 172 of a casing 170 also carrying a knurled feed member 210 for the insole. The casing 170 is raised and lowered by an arm 324 and swung by a crank 330, being carried at the end of a rod 304 urged downwardly by a spring 314. To permit variation of the feed a member 302 forming a sliding connection between the crank 330 and the rod 304 carries a roll 348 co-operating with a cam 364 adjustable towards and away from the roll. Yield is allowed by a spring 340. A rotary work support 366 rests on a ball-bearing 370, and is raised to operative position after an insole has been positioned thereon by a treadle 392 actuating a reversed toggle 378, 382. A gauge 368 for the edge of the insole has three positions for the fore-part and the inside and outside of the waist respectively, adjustable by a handle 424. A hammer 470 is actuated by a yielding coupling 488 to pound the inner marginal portion of the base layer of the strip. A knurled roll 452 yieldingly mounted presses the outer marginal portion of the base layer against the insole. The thermoplastic stiffening material may be a solution of a gum, such as dammar, copal, cumaron or "Nuba." 70 parts by weight of the latter being dissolved in 15 parts each of benzol and naptha. Alternatively, soy-bean protein, or casein provided with a plasticising agent may be used. The insole body may comprise a synthetic material such as "Onco."
