558,320. Reagents for purifying water &c. THERAPEUTIC RESEARCH CORPORATION OF GREAT BRITAIN, Ltd., HEILBRON, 1. M., COOK, A. H., and CATCH, J. R. June 19, 1942, No. 8464. [Class 46] [Also in Group III] In the purification of solutions by chromatographic adsorption, the adsorbent is treated before use with one or more chemicals which will combine with a constituent of the solution, thereby facilitating its separation, and also with a solvent immiscible with the solution to be treated but capable of dissolving the material to be separated. For example, an ethereal solution of barium penicillin is passed through a column of silica gel which contains water and an admixture of barium carbonate. The solute is retained mainly in the lower part of the column and on extraction is recovered with a 4 or 5-fold concentration. Other examples relate to the purification of quinine or of pyruvic acid.
