[Class 28 (i)] A machine for toasting sliced bread comprises two superimposed narrow communicating chambers, the upper one being a drying chamber having a mouth at the top for the edgewise insertion of the slice and the lower one being a toasting chamber having heating means associated therewith and having a discharge mouth at the bottom for the edgewise discharge of the toasted slice. and timing means for timing the passage of the slice from the drying to the toasting chamber and its discharge from the latter. A slice of bread may be inserted through the top 14 of the casing into each chamber of two rows of drying chambers 15 where the slices rest upon two detent rods 17 each common to a row of chambers. At predetermined intervals controlled by timing mechanism described below, the rods are moved laterally along slots 27 to drop the slices into electrically-heated toasting chambers 18 where they are retained by similar detent rods 20 which have previously liberated toasted slices. The detent rods 17, 20 are actuated by electromagnets 31 whose armatures are connected to crank discs 25, 28 coupled to the detent rods by links 26, 29, the energization of the electromagnets being effected at intervals through an electric contact 55 carried by a friction disc 43. The friction disc is driven by a motor 39 through a friction disc 42, and the speed of the friction disc 43 is varied to adjust the drying and toasting periods, by means of an external knob on a shaft 49 which, on rotation, slides the disc 43 horizontally in relation to the disc 42. Switches are provided for placing out of operation unrequired toasting elements, and a control is provided for varying the temperature of the heaters.
