Abstract
558,187. Photo-electric compass reading apparatus. HATAY, C. G. June 1, 1942, Nos. 7409 and 12589. [Class 40 (iii)] A magnetic compass comprising a magnet assembly immersed in liquid in a bowl is scanned by a rotating light beam in association with a photo-electric cell to produce cyclic electric pulses the phase of which is detected to indicate the position of the magnetic compass at a distance. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, light from a lamp 11 is directed to an annular mirror 8 in the compass bowl 6, and is reflected to an inclined mirror 7 on the magnet assembly 1, then to a fixed inclined mirror 20, and finally to a photo-electric cell 23. The lamp 11 is rotated by a motor 16, so that once in each revolution the light reaches the cell 23, the moment this occurs depending on the position of the mirror 7 and magnet assembly 1. In another arrangement, Fig. 6, the lamp 64 and the cell 73 are in axial alignment with the compass bowl 57 ; the light path is indicated by the arrows 67 ... 72 ; and the scanning is performed by the rotation of the lamp structure 65. The distant indications may be given by a stroboscopic device 77 synchronized with the rotation of the lamp structure 65. Several modifications are described.
