[Class 140] [Also in Group X] For depositing upon a surface, such as a road or runway, a mantle of fabric coated, for example, with thermoplastic material the coating means and fabric are moved relatively to the surface, and the fabric is moved through the coating means and deposited, substantially untensioned, upon the surface at a rate substantially equal to the speed of the coating means relatively to the surface. A chassis 1 carrying a tank 8 for the coating material, is mounted without springs on pneumatic-tyred wheels 2 and is provided with a draw-bar 4 which forms part of an automatic brake which prevents over-running of the tractor; the brake may also be applied by a lever 7. The fabric such as hessian impregnated with creosote is carried as a roll or bale in a frame 9 and is drawn between spring pressed guides 11, 13, around a guide bar 12 and roller 17, below a guide bar 54 and a roller 64 in the bath, and between rollers, 21, 31, from which it passes to the road &c. the rollers 21, 31 being hollow or channelled and adapted for connection to a boiler for heating prior to use ; the guide bar 54 and roller 64 are carried by pairs of pivoted arms 55, 65, adapted to be turned into horizontal position by levers 57, 69 to facilitate positioning the fabric, locking means 60, 61, 71, 72, being provided to hold the levers 57, 69. A scraper 103 is adjustable relatively to the roller 31 which is supported betwen arms 29 pivoted on pins 28 and adjusted, to vary the spacing between rollers 21, 31, by screws 82 ; after adjustment, the arms 29 are locked by means of toggles 84, 86. carrying screws 89 engaging brackets 83 carried by the arms. The roller 31 has annular grooves 91 and the rollers 21, 17, have rings of short spikes for drawing the fabric to and through the bath. One roadwheel 2, through a chain 38, drives a pulley 39 which, through a wedge-shaped belt 41, drives a pulley 42, a handle 40 varying the distance between the sides of the pulley 39, to stop or to vary the speed of the drive ; a spring-stressed jockey pulley 50 tensions the belt 41, while the pulley 42 drives the roller 17 through a chain 45, and through a further chain 47 drives a sprocket weel 26 from which the rollers 21, 31, are driven at the same speed by gears 25, 24, and a chain 34 respectively. Curved baffles 75 are provided at the ends of the bath and a seat 78 for the operator is provided at the rear. The coating material may be 80 per cent. bitumen and 20 per cent. filler at about 200‹F.
