Abstract

557,878. Resilient mountings. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. May 5, 1942, No. 6041. Convention date, No. 10, 1941. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXVI] In a vibration isolating mounting particularly for aircraft engines, the engine &c. is mounted upon a ring by a number of spaced brackets or hangers between which and the ring, rubber cushioning means are interposed, a universal joint being preferably provided between the engine end the brackets. The radial cylinder engine 10 which is coaxaly arranged with respect to the mounting ring 14 is attached to brackets 40 by a ball-and-socket connection comprising a ball 56 on a stud 60 and a socket member 52, the ball socket being eccentric to the outer cylindrical surface of the member so that adjustment can be made by turning the member 52 in the eye 50 of the bracket. The member 52 is secured by a screw 66. A rubber cushion 26 is vulcanised to inner and outer metal shells 20, 24 surrounding the ring 14 and the bracket 40 with its strap 42 is clamped by bolts 44 to the outer shell. To increase the friction between the inner shell and the ring a thin inner layer of rubber 22 is provided. The shells and the rubber are divided longitudinally and clearance 28 is provided between adjacent ends of the parts to allow for the deformation of the rubber. The outer shell 24 may also be divided transversely to provide a space 32 for the same purpose, the adjacent edges of the shell being flanged and received in a groove in the bracket: By reason of the ball-and-socket joints the torque vibrations are isolated by a rocking movement of the brackets, the rubber being put under compression in one pair of diagonally disposed zones at opposite ends of the cylindrical part of a bracket and under tension in the other pair of diagonally disposed zones..
