557,748. Transmission dynamometers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and EDMUNDSON, D. Aug. 19, 1942, No. 11645. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XIX] An electric transmission dynamometer in which the torque of a shaft is measured by mounting a pair of alternators along the shaft, the outputs being of the same frequency and in phase when the shaft is rotating with no torque, is characterized by means for measuring directly by a phase meter, the phase angle between the output voltages of the alternators, whereby to indicate the torque transmitted independently of relative variation in the output voltage of the alternators at different speeds. As shown, a single phase alternator A is connected through an inductance LA to the stationary coil of a power-factor meter, while the two phases of a multi-phase alternator B are connected to the moving coils through inductances LB. At no torque, one of the instrument coils aligns itself with the stationary coil : the angle of instrument deflection is proportional to the angle of twist of the shaft.
