Abstract

557,013. Exchange systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BAKER, G. T. April 28, 1942, No. 5664. [Class 40 (iv)] In a system employing voice frequency signals for the setting up and supervision of a connection, the transmission line is normally, blocked to the signalling frequency at some point and the blocking means is neutralized by the arrival at that point of non-signalling frequencies, thus allowing speech to pass without interference. In Fig. 1, a filter rejecting the signalling frequency is cut out by the operation of a relay K which is connected to the line through a similar filter. For one-way operation the relay K may be connected to the output of the line filter. In Fig. 2, the filters F1, F2 are similar to those in Fig. 1, and the output of F2 controls a, variable attenuator SSD (made up of rectifiers for example) shunting the filter F1. In Fig. 3, the line includes a bead TSD of material such as uranium oxide or silver sulphide which when heated by the passage of non-signalling frequencies through its heater winding and a filter F3 changes its resistance rapidly from a high to a low value. In Fig. 4, the line is normally barred to all frequencies and is rendered operative by an echo suppressor ES which is controlled through a filter F4 passing only non-signalling frequencies.
