Abstract

557,011. Helicopters. WEIR, Ltd., G. & J., and PULLIN, C. G. April 22, 1942, No. 5424 [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVI] The invention is concerned with the construction of jet driven blades and the provision of gas sealing means between relatively rotatable parts of the gas ducts through a helicopter rotor hub. Packing rings 52, 53 of moulded compressed carbon are secured within the upper and lower parts 48, 49 of a member tiltable upon a fixed hollow spherical support 47 which the packings closely fit. A hub 65 rotatable upon the tiltable member is sealed against gas leakage at its lower side by piston rings 71 carried by a ring 72 on the member 49. Similar rings 88 prevent escape of gases between each blade root 82 and a member 75 upon which the blade can tilt to vary the pitch of the ring system. The members 75 have belled ends bearing against spherical seatings 76 screwed into projections 74 on the hub and carbon-base packing material 77a is moulded into grooves in the seating against which the belled ends of the members 75 are pressed by springs 79 acting upon a ring 80 carrying a ring of frictional material 78. The blades are formed with a stressed skin stiffened by longitudinal spars 124, Fig. 6, the forward space 145 being D-shaped. At the root the forward portion is swaged to form a circular flared portion 116, 82 in which is secured an inner tube 114 for conveying the gases to the forward space 145 and to the nozzle at the blade tip. The space 145 is lined with insulating material and the skin is coated with an asbestos-base enamel. The spars 124 terminate in a bulkhead 144 braced to the tube 116 by a stay 140, a fairing 143 closing the inner end of the blade. In a modification the central space between the two spars is lined with insulating material having a forward air inlet 137. insulating material and the gases pass through it to an ejector nozzle 138, Fig. 13, having a forward air inlet 137. The forward space encloses a weight 135 for balancing the blade. In another form the gases issue from a venturi shaped nozzle without air inlet and a balance weight is mounted at the forward end of the nozzle.
