Abstract

556,675. Dressing abrasive wheels. JEARMAN, F. C. June 19, 1942, No. 8459. [Classes 60 and 124] In diamond or like tools for dressing abrasive wheels of the type in which the tool is positioned in a dresser with its axis disposed at an angle to the surface to be dressed and is rotatable about its own axis, the tool has a cylindrical shank and is associatied with calibrated parts and an index mark and may be turned about its axis to equally spaced operative positions in succession to bring an appropriately shaped fresh edge of the diamond into the correct working position and in due course regenerate a symmetrical tool tip. Means are provided for locking the tool in an operative position. Fig. 1 shows a cylindrical tool 6 provided with calibrations 13, a mark or index being provided on the support 2 adjacent the calibrations. The tool may be rotated by hand by providing a knurled knob on the front or rear end of the tool. The calibrations 13 may be provided on a bevelled disc 14, Fig. 6, attached to the rear end of the tool which may also be provided with a removable turning knob. The calibrations preferably consist of an odd number of equally spaced graduations and the tool is rotated through two graduations at a time so that the tool is passed through all positions after two revolutions. Various means are employed for clamping the cylindrical tool in its support, e.g. Fig. 14 shows a grub screw 4c. Fig. 15 shows a pad bolt 4e and Fig. 16 shows an eccentric 4f adapted to be turned on its spindle to engage the tool. In Fig. 21 the tool is shouldered at 16 and screw threaded to engage with a clamping nut 17. Fig 24 shows a cylindrical tool 6c provided with longitudinal grooves 20 corresponding to the calibrations 13. The tool is turned by a knurled head 18 and a spring pressed plunger 2d has a nose which co-operates with the grooves 20. Other means such as pins arranged in grooves or holes longitudinally or transversely of the tool may be provided for securing the tool at the various stations. A series of flats may also be provided on the cylindrical surface adapted to be engaged by a spring.
