[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A communication circuit is opened and closed by means of a cold cathode tube which when ionized by the application of anode potential from a bridged source provides a low impedance path for speech currents across its cathodes. Fig. 1 shows the application to a cord circuit with the cathodes 105, 106 interposed in one leg and the anode 107, battery 108 and a switch S in a bridge circuit, which may include a choke coil to exclude alternating current therefrom. The tube acts as a current limiter, since if the signal current at any time equals the total current that can flow in the anode current one cathode will lose all its current. Fig. 3 shows a symmetrical arrangement, while Fig. 5 shows a modification employing a tube with 3 cathodes for interconnecting 3 circuits. In Fig. 4, the battery 126 is supplemented by alternating current from an oscillator 127, and a trigger anode connected to a battery 133 is provided. All the three switches shown must be closed to ionize the tube. The tube is filled with gas such as neon, argon or helium at a pressure of a few millimetres to a few centimetres of mercury, and the cathodes may be arranged as shown in Figs. 6-9.
