Abstract
555,681. Ferric oxide. BERK & CO., Ltd., F. W., and SIX, C. G. April 20, 1942, No. 5259. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] Ferric oxide is obtained by dissolving an oxide or sulphide ore of iron or mill scale in nitric acid to form ferric nitrate and decomposing the ferric nitrate, by heating at 125‹-200‹ C., into ferric oxide and nitric acid. Oxide ores, e.g. magnetite and haematite, are preferred and are treated with nitric acid of specific gravity 1.3 to 1.4. The ferric nitrate is crystallized as the enneahydrated form before decomposition by heating.
