Abstract
555,675. Gramophone needles ; grinding. VOIGHT, P. G. A. H. March 21, 1942, No. 3788. [Class 40 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] The point of a sound-reproducing gramophone needle is made of the shape of an inverted pyramid with rounded contacting edges as shown by the thick lines of the cross-sections shown. The section of the pyramid may be a square but is preferably a rhombus as shown. The two pairs of edges may be rounded as shown, in which case the needle may be turned to make use of either of these pairs of edges as contacting edges against' the side of the record grooves. The needle may be manufactured by first grinding four faces to the shape of a pyramid, then rounding and-polishing. If the material has a crystalline structure having different hardness in different directions, the first grinding may be a conical one, which due to the different hardness in different directions would produce a distorted cone. The 'distortion could then be increased by further localized grinding. Another possible procedure is to grind the working outline first and then round off and shape the other parts of the surface.
