Abstract
555,447. Purifying and stabilizing fatty oils and fats. NATIONAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Jan. 14, 1942, No. 560. Convention date, Jan. 21, 1941. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Fatty materials, particularly those containing vitamins A and D, are refined and stabilized by treatment with a solvent and a vegetable meal. Preferably the solvent contains a small amount of a lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. Antioxidants are extracted from the meal and undesirable bad-tasting and odoriferous constituents are removed from the fatty material. The latter may be fish-liver oils concentrates prepared therefrom and also vitamin-free fats and oils such as cotton-seed oil, soyabean oil, pea-nut oil, sesame oil and lard. Meals from cotton seed, soyabean, sesame oil, corn-germ, wheat-germ, alfalfa leaf, pea-nuts, rice-bran, rye and barley are mentioned. It is advantageous to deaerate the meal before use and also to add an adsorbent such as an activated earth or carbon. Suitable solvents are hexane, octane, ethylene dichloride, trochlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, benzene, acetone and diacetone alcohol, to which may be added acetic, propionic, butyric or lactic acid. In examples, shark-liver oil is refluxed with soyabean, wheat-germ or corngerm meal and acetone containing some acetic acid. Before use the meal and solvent are deaerated by passing nitrogen through the mixture. The mass is then filtered and the solvent removed from the resulting refined liver oil. In a further example, sword-fish liver oil is treated with ethylene dichloride, cottonseed meal and activated carbon.
