Abstract

555,249. Setting projectile fuzes. PHELAN, R. June 26, 1942, No. 8834. [Class 9 (i)] In order that a time fuze of the combustion-ring type may not disclose it setting to the enemy, the setting scale is provided on the setter (hand-type) and not on the fuze. The setter comprises a "fixed" ring e and a rotatable ring f, the latter having handles m, m<SP>1</SP>. The ring e bears an inflammable scale k so that it may be readily destroyed in an emergency. Each of the rings e, f has diametrically-opposed keys, h<SP>1</SP>, h<SP>2</SP> and j<SP>1</SP>, j<SP>2</SP>, respectively, and the body b and time ring c of the fuze have corresponding keyways for engagement therewith. To ensure correct positional engagement, the opposed keys (and keyways) are of different widths. The ring e is grooved at el to receive adjustably two stop elements n, p. The stop n is normally fixed in the zero position, while the stop p is set to the required setting- mark on the scale and clamped by the wing-nut pl. The handle m has a stop-engaging lug m<SP>2</SP> and the fuze is set by rotating the ring f from the zero position until the lug engages the adjustable stop p.
