Abstract

554,943. Baling-presses. CASE CO., J. I. Jan. 16, 1942, No. 693. Convention date, April 19, 1941. [Class 94 (i)] A baler, particularly intended for picking-up and baling fibrous material, such as hay or straw, comprises a baling-chamber having a feed opening in an upright wall thereof, a plunger slidable in this chamber for compressing ihe fibrous material, a shearing-device on the plunger for cutting through the material in the feed opening as the plunger moves forwards, pick-up mechanism, and an endless conveyer for carrying the material from the pick-up to the opening in the chamber. The baler comprises a T- shaped structure, shown in plan in Fig. 1, which is mounted on wheels 41, 44, 55, Figs 1 and 2, and is provided with an engine E for driving the pressure-producing mechanism and the conveyers. The baling chamber 29, Figs 1 and 4, is of rectangular cross-section and contains a box - like plunger 135 which is reciprocated by a crank 81 driven by the motor E. Material is gathered from the ground by a pick-up P which is constructed and operated as described in Specification 570,422, [Group I]. The material is deposited on an endless band conveyer 25, Fig. 4, which conveys it to an opening 212 in an upright wall of the baling-chamber. A rotatable drum 26 rests on the material and assists the belt 25 in feeding the material towards and into the baling chamber. On the backward stroke of the plunger 135, the material enters the chamber through the opening 212, and on the forward stroke of the plunger, the material is compressed and thrust forward along the baling chamber a column of compressed material thus moving step by step along the baling chamber. During the forward movement of the plunger, a blade 150 attached to one edge co-operates with the edge of the opening 212 to cut through the material and separate the charge in the baling-chamber from that in the belt 25. As the material is compressed, on the forward movement of the plunger, it is retained and prevented from moving backwards with the the plunger by dogs that project into the chamber. From time to time, a forked divider 403, Fig. 12, is inserted in the baling-chamber between the material and the plunger, and is "baled-in" and carried along by the material, binding-wires being inserted in grooves 412 in the limbs of the divider. The divider is inserted in the baling-chamber automatically by means of a holder 432 operated by a cable and a stretched spring. An operator secures the ends of the wires to isolate a portion of the material as a bale, and the divider is withdrawn automatically from the baling-chamber by a fixed cam 484. The engine E may be dispensed with and the mechanism driven by an associated tractor.
