Abstract
554,124. Lubricating compositions. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. Sept. 18, 1941, No. 11972. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1940. [Class 91] [Also in Groups IV and V] Unsaturated ethers wherein each of the two radicals directly linked to the ether oxygen atom contains an olefinic linkage between two carbon atoms each of which is linked to at least one hydrogen atom and neither directly linked to the oxygen atom, are reacted with halogens under such conditions that a liquid phase is present in the reaction zone. The ether may be a di-allyl type or of the general formula :- where each R is hydrogen, or an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, alkenyl, aralkenyl, alicyclic, or heterocyclic radical which may be further substituted and m and n are positive integers, such ethers being halogenated to form compounds of the formula :- for example bis #, γ-dichlor n-propyl) ether, which may be substituted for dichlorethyl ether &c. in lubricants for high pressures or where volatilization would effect breaking of the lubricant film.
