Abstract
552,828. Storm lamps. WINKLEMAN, R. Jan. 21, 1942, Nos. 904/42 and 1052/43. [Classes 75 (i), 75 (ii) and 75 (iv)] In a hurricane lamp or tornado lantern a translucent or transparent cylinder 27 is movable on a wire frame 14 secured to a perforated member 5 carrying the wick tube 11. The member 5 which is lid-shaped in cross-section is secured by screws 10 to discs 6, 7 and a screw plug 4. The plug 4 is threaded into a socket 3 in the top of a fuel container which is formed with spaced protuberances 9 engaged by the rim of member 5. The discs 6, 7 are formed with spaced legs 8. The cylinder 27 rests on a lidshaped member 16 slidable on the frame 14 and having a large central aperture. A wire gauze cylinder 17 surrounds the rims of the members 5, 16. A third lid shaped member 19 slidable on the frame 14 and upper and lower discs 20 similar to the discs 6, 7 are secured by an eye bolt 24 to an apertured plate 21 seated on the top of the cylinder 27 and surrounded by a gauze cylinder 22. The members 16, 19 are clipped together by two looped wires 28 so 'that they and the cylinder 27 may be raised as a unit by means of the bolt 24 when it is desired to ignite the wick 12. The wire frame 14 may serve as a handle or a handle 31 may be hinged thereon. One Provisional Specification states that the wick tube is preferably bifurcated at its upper end to produce a laterally spread flame and the wick is forced by a spring against inwardly bent lugs at the base of the bifurcated end. It also states that the fuel container may be provided with a lever lid supporting the wick tube and that the transparent or translucent cylinder may be hinged to a U-shaped member secured to a perforated cylinder soldered to the lid.
