Abstract
552,583. Recovering aluminium from residues. SINGER, F., and BLASS, L. Sept. 19, 1941, No. 12011. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group III] Aluminium oxide is recovered from aluminium, or aluminium alloy, dross skimmings or scraps containing aluminium oxide, carbide and nitride fluxes such as fluorides, chlorides and metallic particles by treating the material with a caustic soda solution the concentration of which and the temperature of the reaction are kept sufficiently low to produce a solution containing a higher proportion of aluminium to silicon than the original material. The temperature is kept below 110C. and the concentration of the solution below 27 per cent. and preferably below 18 per cent. After separating metallic aluminium the comminuted material is treated with the solution in, e.g. an iron vessel which, if gas is evolved owing to the pressure of carbides, nitrides or metal is a closed container. If ammonia is evolved owing to the pressure 'of nitrides it may be collected as ammonium sulphate. The residue after removal of the alkali aluminate solution may be treated with ammonia or an acid to remove copper or nickel oxides. Aluminium oxide may be obtained from the aluminate solution in known manner.
