Abstract
551,548. Non-reflecting coatings; glass; antihalation films. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Jan. 6, 1941, No. 184. [Classes 97 (i) and 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] An article of low reflectivity comprises a transparent body, e.g. of glass or film base, of relatively low refractive index, e,g. less than 1.5, a superimposed layer of transparent material, e.g. urea-formaldehyde resin or polystyrene of relatively high refractive index gradually diffused into the body to avoid a sharp reflecting surface and having a thickness greater than one quarter the wavelength of the light for which low reflectivity is desired and an upper layer or layers of a transparent material, e.g. ethyl cellulose or cellulose caproate having such a low refractive index and of such a thickness as to reduce reflectivity by interference. The diffused coating may comprise a number of layers each of lower refractive index than the last. A subbing may be applied between the base and this coating and, if of the same refractive index as the base, need not be diffused. As shown a cellulose acetate-propionate base 46 provided with an emulsion layer 47 is coated with a subbing 48 of cellulose nitrate having the same index of refraction and a coating of ureaformaldehyde resin 49 is diffused into the subbing by the use of a common solvent e.g. 20 per cent acetone, 60 per cent methanol and 20 per cent ethylene dichloride or equal parts of acetone and ethylene dichloride. A further coating of ureaformaldehyde resin 50 in a chlorinated hydrocarbon is applied, followed by a top coa'ing of cellulose caproate 51 one quarter wave-length thick. Other combinations described are a cellulose acetate base, a subbing of alkyl-toluene-psulnhonamide-formaldehyde resin, a high refractive index diffused layer of polystyrene and an overcoating of cellulose caproate or ethyl cellulose ; and a flint glass body into which is diffused a glass of high refractive index by heating in contact for some time, with an upper coating of low refractive index.
