[Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Azo dyes are obtained by coupling in substance or on the materials a diazotized amine (other than a diazotized 4-nitro-2-cyanoaniline) with an N-substituted-3 : 5-disubstituted aniline in which the N-substituents are non-aryl. The products give shades of a more pronounced tertiary cast than those obtainable with the corresponding coupling components in which the 3- and/or 5-positions are unsubstituted. The monoazo products derived from diazotized mononuclear amines of the benzene series dye cellulose ester or ether textile materials directly from aqueous baths. The disazo and polyazo dyes are suitable for application to such materials in solution in organic liquids (cf. Specification 550,659) for incorporation in solutions from which fibres, foils or films of such materials are to be shaped, and for formation on such materials from their components. The products are also applicable for colouring synthetic linear superpolyamide materials. Specified coupling components are the N-diethyl and N-di-(#-hydroxyethyl) derivatives of 3 : 5-dimethyl-aniline, 3-methoxy-5- acetylamino - aniline, 3 - methyl - 5 - chloro - aniline and 3-methyl-5-bromo-aniline. Specified diazo components are o-, m- and p-nitroanilines, o-, m- and p-chloroanilines, 4-nitro- 2 - chloroaniline, 4 - nitro - 2 - methoxyaniline, 2 : 4 - dinitro - 6 - chloroaniline. 2: 6 - dichloro - 4 - nitroaniline. 2 - chloro - 6 - bromo - 4 - nitro - aniline, 2-aminobenzthiazole and its 4- or 6-methyl and 4- or 6-methoxy derivatives, and aminoazo compounds such as those described in Specifications 523,287 and 550,839. Examples relate to the production of the dyestuffs, (1) 4- or 3-nitroaniline or 4-acetylaminoaniline# N - di - (# hydroxyethyl) - 3 : 5 - dimethyl - aniline ; (2) 2 : 6 - dichloro 4 - nitroaniline# the N - di - (# hydroxyethyl) derivative of 3 : 5-dimethyl-aniline or 3-methyl- 5-chloro-aniline ; (3) 4-nitroaniline or its 2 : 6- dichloro derivative# 3 : 5 - dimethyl - aniline# 3 : 5 - dimethyl - N - di - (# - hydroxyethyl) - aniline or 4-nitroaniline #2-acetylamino-5- methoxy - aniline# 3 : 5 - dimethyl - N - di - ( # - hydroxyethyl) - aniline ; (4) 4 - nitroaniline# 8 :.5 - dimethylaniline# 3 : 5 - dimethyl - N - - diethyl-aniline.
