Abstract
551,051. Charging glass-melting tanks. STEVENS, A. H. (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.). Aug. 6, 1941, No. 10017. [Class 51 (ii)] Glass making materials are fed from a hopper 35, Fig. 2, on to the surface of the molten glass in a glass tank by a reciprocating plate 40 arranged at the base of the hopper which is provided with a rotary screw charge leveller 43. The charge is fed in a uniform layer on to the glass in the tank and is gradually moved forward into the heating zone. The plate 40 is connected to a frame 50 mounted between rollers 52 and driven by a motor 75 through a crank and connecting rod and rack and pinion gearing 55, 56. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the charge is fed into the tank from a hopper 221 by a reciprocating plate 115 and a reciprocating water cooled slide 215. The plate 115 and slide 215 are mounted on separate independently driven carriages 100, 200 and are moved forward together to feed the material into the tank and the plate 115 and slide 215 are then withdrawn successively.
