[Class 95] A machine for coating the interiors of containers or similar articles comprises a plurality of article holders mounted for movement along a predetermined path and a plurality of coating devices mounted for movement along at least a portion of that path with the holders, and is characterized by mechanism for moving the holders and the articles into operative relation to the coating devices and for actuating the coating devices as a result of that movement or a continuation thereof, thereby to coat the articles in the holders, the said mechanism being rendered inoperative to move the holders in the absence of articles in the holders, whereby the coating devices associated with empty holders are not actuated. In the machine illustrated, the table 10 rotates on a vertical axis 11, and carries vertical posts 12 upon which the can-supporting assemblies are mounted for vertical sliding movement. The table 10 also supports an annular trough 13 for containing molten wax or other coating material. Opposite each vertical post 12, is a sprayer assembly comprising a cylinder 20, a piston 22, a spring 23, and an upwardly projecting discharge pipe 24 carrying a nozzle 25. The lower reduced portion 12<SP>1</SP> of each post 12 carries a slidable sleeve 31, bracket arm 33, can-receiving chuck 34, and pivoted clamp 41. The clamps 41 are opened and closed by the engagement of rollers 46 with a cam track 45. A second slidable sleeve 55, on each post 12, is raised and lowered once during each revolution of the table 10, by the engagement of a roller 58 with a cam groove 59, and this reciprocating movement is transferred from the sleeve 55 to the sleeve 31 when the toggle mechanism 62, 63 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, thus lowering the can and the piston 22, and causing a stream of liquid wax to be projected upwardly into the interior of the can. When, however, the toggle mechanism is in its other position, with its lower end 75 clear of the block 76, the sleeve 55 is free to reciprocate without imparting movement to the sleeve 31. Cans are carried on a conveyer chain 85, and, at the position 50, are transferred from the clamps 88 to the chucks 34 on the table 10. Adjacent the path of the cans on the conveyer, there is a pivoted feeler 92, which operates the toggle mechanism through the switch 97 and compressed air cylinder 102, in such a manner that upon encountering an empty can holder 88, the coating device associated with that empty holder is rendered inoperative. A pre-heating oven 86, and a wax drain 122, may be provided.
