Abstract
550,761. Frictional vibration-dampers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 5, 1941. No. 14262. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1940. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XXII] Material for damping sound and like vibrations of audible frequency e.g. in the motorcompressor unit of a domestic refrigerator, consists of sheet metal having slits, the edges of which are in frictional contact so as to damp out the vibrations produced therein. A thin metal disc 14, Fig. 4, may have six slits 11 made by a rough shearing tool, the edges of the slits being then restored substantially to their original position, so that they are in rough frictional contact. The disc may be slightly convex, and may be painted or varnished. Flock may be blown on to the freshly-painted surface to increase the damping effect.
