Abstract

550,252. Moulding compositions. LEADER, S. A. June 26, 1941, No. 8041. [Class 2 (iii)] A resilient moulding or thermoplastic composition suitable for the manufacture of artificial joints, hands, fingers, noses, ears, lips. tongues and linings or additions to dentures and other polymerized products comprises polymeric and/or monomeric methyl methacrylate and, as a plasticizer, an unsubstituted phenol or mixture of phenols, the phenol being present between 33 and 150 per cent. calculated on the weight of methacrylate. Specified phenols are thymol, phenol, creosote and guaiacol. Up to 10 per cent. of the methacrylate may be replaced by other acrylate or vinyl resins; and up to 50 per cent. of the phenol may be replaced by other plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate. Resilient articles are made by heating the composition in a mould, and material is obtained suitable for injection moulding by fusing the composition preferably by heating between 60 and 100‹C., if desired with addition of an anti-catalyst, e.g. hydroquinone. Tin or silicate lined plaster moulds may be used, but if the monomer i, used it is preferred to heat under reflux with stirring. The powdered composition can be sprayed through a hot nozzle to give a rubberlike deposit, and this process may be used for flexibly uniting sections of hard methyl methacrylate. It may also be passed between hot rollers to form sheets resembling dental rubber. The composition may also' include a solvent for the phenol, pigments and dyes ; specified are titanium dioxide and Sudan III. Composite hard and soft moulded articles may be obtained by distributing. suitable compositions in the mould. The greater the proportion of phenol the softer the product. The compositions may be used with other polymerized vinyl and methacrylate products, e.g. the "bone" of an artificial finger is of non- or slightly plasticized polymerized methyl methacrylate, the composition forming the "flesh". If necessary trimming may be carried out with a hot body followed by wiping with a solvent, e.g. chloroform, monomeric methyl methacrylate. Specification 358,534 is referred to.
