Abstract

[Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Groups X and VIII] Synthetic resins, preferably laminated, are used to reinforce concrete, the resin being arranged to lie on the outside of the structure, to form, if desired, a finished surface. Bonding over the whole of the contacting surfaces is produced by roughening or grooving the resin surface adjacent to the concrete, or providing it with a coarse fibrous fabric (hessian) impregnated with the resin and pressed to and cured with the sheet. A layer of unimpregnated paper is interposed to prevent the fabric &c. from being pressed right into the sheet. The surface so prepared may be coated with white lead and varnish. A continuous layer of sand may be pressed into the sheet during manufacture, two sheets being pressed against each other except for a separating sheet of unimpregnated paper. The resins between the laminations forming the sheet may be different from those used for impregnating the laminations for colouring purposes or for increasing resistance to moisture, a urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde resin may be used, the core of the sheet being bonded with phenolformaldehyde resin. One or more layers of concrete may be laid on the resin surface. The binder for the sand and aggregate may consist of a " synthetic cement," such as these resinous materials, essentially condensation products which harden after mixing, usually through the addition of a weak acid. Urea-formaldehyde resins with fillers known under the Registered Trade Marks " Beetle Cement," " Aerolite Glue," may be used.
