Abstract

[Class 32] [Also in Group XIII] In steam raising and utilizing plant, e.g. as used on board ship, comprising a steam boiler 10, a prime mover 9 and other steam utilizing appliances 11, a condenser 12 for the exhaust steam, a hot well 13 for the condensate and a pump 14 returning feed water through a heater 15 to the boiler, distilled water for make up and other purposes is produced by passing sea or like impure water through a coil 23 in a preheater 16 and thence into an evaporator 17 the latent heat of the steam produced being recovered by leading it through 18, 19 into a hot well 13, and the heater 16 and evaporator 17 being heated by waste steam from the prime mover and appliances 9, 1.1. In one modification the steam produced in the evaporator 17 is itself used to heat the preheater 16 and the proportion of steam fed direct to the hot well to that fed through the preheater may be controlled. In Fig. 3 the combined steam exhausts are fed through 28 to the preheater 16 and thence through line 29 to the coil 20 in the evaporator 17. In a further modification the impure water is preheated by passage through a coil in the hot well 13, alternatively it may be heated 'in a coil exposed to the heat of the furnace gases used to heat the steam boiler. The latent heat of the steam may also be recovered indirectly by passing part of the steam through a coil in the hot well as well as directly into the water therein. A plurality of preheaters 16 may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 112,223 and 158,219, [both in Class 32].
