Abstract

549,591. Fluid-pressure servomotor-controlsystems. SERCK RADIATORS, Ltd., and WATKINS, C. Aug. 20, 1941, Nos. 10631 and 13402. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXV] The invention relates to liquid coolers or heaters in which the cooling or heating is obtained by heat transfer between one liquid and air or other gas, and particularly to oil or water coolers on aircraft or land vehicles. A shutter controlling the flow of gas through the cooler or heater is operated by screw mechanism from reversible electric or fluid-operated motor which also operates through a second screw, a slidable control member which co-operates with a second slidable control member, operated in response to thermal conditions in the cooler or heater to control the motor. An electric motor may drive a worm i coupled to the shutter-operating screw e and to a screw k operating a slide carrying a contact o co-operating with contacts x on a slide w actuated by differential fluid pressures in a cylinder q. The opposite ends of the cylinders are connected by pipes to the 'inlet and outlet of the cooler. A change in viscosity of the oil will actuate the slide w and cause a change in the setting of the shutters c accompanied by a follow-up movement of the contact o. To overcome " coring" in the oil due to very low air temperature a thermostat device such as a metal bellows at the cooler outlet, which it can respond to the temperature of the oil core, may operate the control to cause closing of the shutters. The slide w may be operated preferably through a lost-motion connection by a thermostatic device responding to oil temperature in any convenient position.
