Abstract

549,551. Preparation of cellulosic pulp. AKTIEBOLAGET DEFRIBRATOR. March 17, 1941, No. 3663. Convention date, March 21, 1940. [Class 2 (ii)] Lignocellulosic raw material is subjected to mechanical defibration in a closed receptacle at a temperature above 100‹C. and under a steam pressure above atmospheric pressure, acid conditions corresponding to a pH-value of 1-4 being maintained within the raw material by the addition of a solution of an acid, a salt, or other compound capable of creating acid conditions at the elevated temperature of the treatment. The treatment is carried out for a period of not more than 10 minutes, after which the fibre stock is immediately discharged from the receptacle. The process is applicable to the treatment of straw from wheat, rye, corn, rice, grasses, flax, and other plants, or of wood, bagasse or bamboo. The acidic substance may be sulphuric, sulphurous, hydrochloric, nitric, or acetic acid, or sodium bisulphate, sodium bisulphite, or aluminium sulphate. The conditions of treatment are preferably such that a slight hydrolysis of the hemi-celluloses including pentosanes occurs but the lignin and cellulose are substantially unaffected. The process may be carried out as a continuous operation in apparatus having a continuous feeder, pre-heater, disc refiner, and discharger. The feeder may consist of a plunger or feed-screw, continuously pressing the chips or chaff into a steam-tight plug through a relatively narrow plug-forming pipe into the pre-heater of the defibrator which is working in an atmosphere of steam under pressure. The quantity of solution added is not greater than what can be absorbed by the material. The plunger or screw feeder presses out any excess of acid solution. The defibrated pulp is discharged to the outside atmosphere. It may then be washed, beaten, screened, and formed into paper or board. The acidic solution may be applied to the fibrous material by immersion or spraying. If desired, it may be sprayed into the defibrator. A mineral acid may be used in an amount of 0.2-3 per cent. based on the weight of dry straw. The moisture present, including condensed steam, should be about one-quarter to ten litres per kilogram of material when the latter is subjected to the mechanical treatment.
