Abstract

548,934. Bowden mechanism. AUTOMOTIVE REMOTE CONTROLS (STOKE-ON-TRENT), Ltd., and LOWTHER, J. Oct. 21, 1941, No. 13546. [Class 80 (iii)] Relates to Bowden mechanism in which the guide tube or casing contains a pull-transmitting cable surrounded by a thrust transmitting member in the form of a helical coil surrounding the cable and in contact with the interior surface of the guide tube. According to the invention, the pull-transmitting member is of a composite unit construction comprising one or more wire coils tightly wound on the cable and movable therewith and relatively to the outer coil around bends and spaced therefrom. The guide tube, which may be in two parts 1, 1a connected by a universal joint 2, Figs. 1, 4, has slidably mounted in each end thereof a tubular terminal member 3 with a connecting knuckle 4. Adjacent the inner surface of the tube is the thrust-transmitting coil 5 bearing on nuts 3a which serve to lock the members 3 to tubular parts 7 to which the ends of the cable are secured. The parts 3, 7 are adapted to be relatively adjusted by a screw-driver at 8 to vary the tension of the cable. The wire 6 has two coils 9, 10 wound tightly thereon in opposite directions and to a longer pitch than that of the coil 5 so that the convolutions of the layer 10 will cross those of coil 5 and not lie between them. These coils may take the form of a multi-start thread of long pitch. As modifications there may be one layer or more than two; the outer layer may be wound oppositely to and of a pitch greater than or equal to that of coil 5 or in the same direction and of greater pitch. Instead of the terminal member 7 being secured directly to the part 6 it may be swaged or otherwise attached to the inner layer 9. In all forms the whole of the parts may be withdrawn from the guide tube by unscrewing the parts 3, 3a from off the members 7.
