Abstract
548,575. Glass melting tanks and other receptacles for molten glass. AUSTRALIAN GLASS MANUFACTURERS CO., PROPRIETARY, Ltd. June 28, 1941, No. 8161. Convention date, June 28, 1940. [Class 51 (ii)] In glass melting tanks, forehearths, drawing pits and other receptacles for molten glass in which the side or end walls are stepped below the glass level, one or more of the side and end walls is or are formed of courses of refractory blocks arranged in echelon with their adjacent faces overlapping to avoid the formation of horizontal joints. Fig. 1 shows a glass melting tank having a melting-chamber 10 and working- chamber 9 separated by a bridge 11, the walls below the level of the glass being formed of courses of blocks 19, 20 in overlapping and stepped relation to form steps 24, 25. The bridge is provided with single steps 26 and the working- chamber 9 with single steps 27. The courses may be separately supported as shown in Fig. 4, and cooling pipes 28 may be arranged below the vertical joints. The upper step 25 may be extended into charging boxes 17 arranged in the end wall of the melting-chamber 10. As shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the upper steps may be channelled and the channels may be fed with material from charging boxes 31 located in the walls at the ends of the channels which may extend only along part of the length of the step. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also charging boxes provided with a step or ledge below the glass level. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
