548,220. Vinyl resin compositions electrical insulation ; coated fabrics ; proofing permeable materials. BAKELITE, Ltd. March 29, 1940, No. 5728. Convention date, April 7, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXXVI] A composition, adapted for use as an electrical insulating or a fire proofing material, comprises a copolymer of a vinyl halide and a vinyl ester of a lower aliphatic acid, a flame-resistant plasticizer, an agent acting as a flux for the composition, and a mineral or vegetable wax, a mineral oil, a fatty acid or a soap, the copolymer having an average molecular weight between 8000 and 18000 and consisting of between 7 and 95 per cent. of a vinyl halide and between 20 and 5 per cent. of vinyl ester, the amount of plasticizer being between 30 and 60 per cent. by weight on the weight of the plasticizer and copolymer, the flux being in amount between about 33 and 100 per cent. on the weight of the copolymer and the mineral or vegetable wax, mineral oil, fatty acid or soap being in amount between about 2 and 5 per cent. by weight on the weight of the composition. The vinyl halide may be the chloride, bromide, iodide or fluoride, and the vinyl ester the acetate, propionate, butyrate, valerate or caproate. The plasticizer is tricresyl phosphate or a chlorinated naphthalene, e.g. trichloronaphthalene, and the flux is a natural or synthetic resin, e.g. coumarone resin, polystyrene, a chloronaphthalene-formaldehyde resin, or a phenol-formaldehyde resin. Colouring materials or pigments, e.g. titanium oxide, and fillers, e.g. barytes or diatomaceous earth may be incorporated in the composition. The composition, when applied to metal tubing, to the hoses of fire extinguishers or to textiles, for instance awnings, tarpaulins or curtains, render these articles fire resistant and' resistant to attack from fumes.
