Abstract

547,157. Washing machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 7, 1941, No. 1631. Convention date, Feb. 7, 1940. [Class 138 (ii)] In machines for washing and drying centrifugally clothes in a single receptacle the object of preventing a film of impurities collecting on the clothes is attained by the following construction. The receptacle having sides and bottom 17 is attached to a carrier 4, 15 having a central disc 18 with an upward cylindrical flange 19 to which the receptacle is held by a snap ring 21. The flange has vertical passages 51 and has fixed in it a hub sleeve 20 extending above the normal liquid level and carrying at the upper end a sleeve bearing 29 secured by a washer 30 and spun-over edge 31. Running in the bearing is a flanged sleeve 32 splined on a driving shaft 26 shouldered at 36 to support the sleeve flange 33 which is separated from the bearing 29 by alternate friction material and metal discs one of which has a projection 37 to engage a projection 38 on the hub sleeve 20 so that the shaft 26 drives the hub and receptacle 20 during continuous rotation for drying. The splined upper end extends to take into a nut 39 seated in a socket 40 in the upper end 41 of the hub of the agitator 42 which is supported by a thrust washer 43 on the sleeve 32, and has a bearing 46 running on the flange 19 of the carrier. An 'annular trough 47 formed on the top of the agitator hub slightly below water level has passages 49 leading to the space between it and the receptacle hub 20 so that the surface liquid with scum circulated radially towards the trough passes down to and through the vertical passages 51 into the main chamber 1. Liquid is sent by a pump 12 from the main chamber 1 by a pipe 13 through a ring filter 10 back to the receptacle. The driving shaft 26 passes from the motor 27 through a watertight fitting 24 and a bearing 25 in a sleeve 23 and through a sleeve bearing 28 fixed in the hub 20 of the receptacle.
