Abstract

546,781. Packing; non-metallic hollow ware. WATERS, H. F. Nov. 18, 1940, No. 16634. [Classes 66 and 94 (i)] Relates to a method of packing liquid or granular material in a container of the kind constituted by an outer carton with a fluidtight lining. According to the invention, a carton is so constructed that by moving the side flaps at the top of the carton outwards, the mouth of the lining becomes folded into a flattened form in the plain of the top of the carton, and can then be sealed hermetically to form a flat seal. The carton is made from a blank 1, Fig. 1, having longitudinal scored lines 2, 3, 4, 5 and transverse scored lines 6, 7, 8, 9 that defined the front and back panels 10, 11 respectively, and sides 12, 13. the front and back being connected by a bottom panel 20 with a central transverse scored line 21. The panel 11 has side pieces or guides 26, 27 each of which has an inclined edge 29. A lining 32, Fig. 2, is secured to the blank 1 by lines 33 of adhesive. This lining is of fluid-tight material which is composed of or coated with heat-sealable material, such as a sheet of paper with a coating of rubber hydrochloride or thermoplastic resinous material. After the lining is secured, the blank 1 is folded along the line 21 and the marginal portions of the folded lining are sealed by and pressure to convert it into a fluid-tight envelope open at the top..The sides of the carton are folded along lines 22, 23, Fig. 1. and secured by adhesive to form a container in flattened form, as shown in Fig. 4, with the guides 26, 27 tucked between the folds at the sides of the lining. In use, the blank is expanded, as shown in Fig. 5, with the guides 26, 27 tucked behind side folds or fins 34, 35 of the lining which are secured to the sides 12, 13 and the side flaps 16, 18 at the top of the carton. After the carton is filled the side flaps 16, 18 are folded outwards, and the mouth of the lining is spread out and flattened, as shown in Fig. 8, by the engagement of the guides 26. 27 with the fins 34, 35. The lining is then heat-sealed along the edges, and the top of the container is closed by folding the flaps of the carton. The guides 26, 27, instead of forming part of the carton blank may be made separate and attached to the blank by adhesives or staples.
