Abstract

546,692. Railway-vehicle undercarriages. BUDD WHEEL CO. Jan. 20, 1941, No. 780. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1940. [Class 103 (vi)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A railway truck is provided with pivoted hangers which are adapted to assume a position in which they serve as a temporary support, in assembling, for a frame or yoke that carries the shoes and operating mechanism of a disc brake and another position in which they act as an emergency support for the frame in the event of failure of the normal support. The brake supporting frame comprises a crossbar 6 and end arms 9 which, with detachable straps 12, embrace the axle boxes 13. A torque arm 10 on the frame extends into a casing 1 secured to the track cross piece 7, the casing preferably containing yieldable means for preventing excessive up and down movement of the arm 10. A pair of levers 17, 18 is pivotally mounted at 15, 16 on the member 6 adjacent each wheel and carry at one end brake shoes 19 for application to a disc 4 secured to the axle 2. The lever 17 carries also an operating cylinder 14 the piston of which is connected to the lever 18. At each side of the truck frame 1 a hanger 21 is pivoted at 24 in a bracket 35, the hangers being connected by a bar 20. In assembling the truck, after the brake frame 6, 9 has been mounted on the truck frame, the hangers are engaged beneath the arms 9 to support the brake frame in the position shown in Fig. 3 and are held against movement away from the frame by cams 28 pivoted at 29. The frames may then be lowered by a chain 50 on to the wheel and axle assembly and, as the axle boxes slide with the pedestals 8, the frame 6, 9 assumes the normal position and the hangers swing into the position shown in Fig. 2 in which they extend below the brake frame to serve as supports therefore should the connection 10, 11 fail. The hangers are held in this position by the engagement of a projection 27 thereon with a stop on the bracket 35 and by the cam 28. Specification 534,947, [Group XXXIV], is referred to.
