[Class 2 (iii)] In the production of aliphatic acid anhydrides by the oxidation of aldehydes, the reaction liquor is circulated to and from a cooler and a portion is diverted for the recovery of anhydride, the amount of liquor introduced into the reaction zone by the circulation being much greater than the amount of aldehyde introduced in the same time. The catalyst may be a mixture of cobalt and copper acetates, but the use of acetates of cobalt, manganese, iron and nickel and mixtures thereof is also mentioned. The catalyst salt is preferably anhydrous. Examples describe the production of acetic anhydride from acetaldehyde, but propionic, butyric, valeric and caproic anhydrides may be made similarly.
