545,941. Polyamides ; phenol-aldehyde resins. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 18, 1940, No. 17819. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Modified polyamides suitable for use in moulding or coating compositions or for drawing into fibres are obtained by heating polyamideforming reactants with phenol until a non- fibre-forming polyamide is obtained and then continuing the heating in presence of formaldehyde or formaldehyde liberating substance. Alternatively, a low molecular weight polyamide may be heated with a phenol and formaldehyde. The phenols employed must be free -from amide-forming groups ; phenol, o-cresol, p-cresol, p-tert. butyl phenol and ptert. amyl phenol being specified. Formaldehyde liberating substances specified are paraform, trioxymethylene, methylal and hexa. Polyamide forming reactants as specified in Specifications 461,236 and 461,237 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,071,250 and 2,130,948 may be employed. The first stage is carried out at temperatures of 180-290‹ C. in a vessel flushed with oxygen-free nitrogen, and the second stage at temperatures of 180-225‹ C. The products may be hardened by the usual catalysts employed in hardening phenol-formaldehyde resins.
