Abstract
545,662. Spinning-tops; games of chance. Mc- KEOWN, J. L. Dec. 5, 1940, No. 17299. [Classes 132 (ii) and 132 (iii)] In a top for use in playing games of chance the spinning point consists of a projectile which is projected from the top body when the top falls over. As shown in Fig. 3, the top contains a spring- pressed plunger 19 which is retracted. into engagement with a catch 20 by pressing a loose ball 14 into the restricted mouth of a tube 17 guiding the plunger. When the top, after being spun upon a game board, falls on to its side an actuating arm 22 displaces the catch 20 and the plunger projects the ball fortuitously into one of a number of scoring pockets situated around a board. In a modification, Fig. 6, the ball 27 fits on to a tubular part 24 of the top and is retained by a spring 28 until an actuating arm 30 (displaced when the top falls) liberates the spring-pressed plunger 26 whereupon the ball is projected on the the board. In a further modification, Fig. 10, an hexagonal top marked on its sides with the pips of a die contains a magnet 35 which attracts the soft iron head of a loose hexagonal projectile 41 similarly marked with pips. When, after being spun, the top falls on its side and rotates thereon, the projectile 41 is freed from the magnet by centrifugal force and projected thereby on to the board. The pip indications on the top and projectile when these come to rest afford means for playing various games of chance. The magnet 35 is disposed with. In a further modification, Fig. 14, a second loose die 51 carrying the spinning handle 52 is arranged in the body of the top thus providing a top embodying three dice.
