Abstract

545,562. Duplicating machines. FORD, F. R. July 23, 1941, No. 9289. Addition to 538,163. [Class 100 (ii)] Modifications in the duplicating machine described in the parent Specification comprise (1) operatively connecting each pressure roller to its corresponding moistening pad so that they move into and out of operation simultaneously. Each pressure roller 39, Figs. 2 and 3 is carried by a stem 38 slidable in a box 35 and raised to the inoperative position by a spring 52 connected to a lug 50 on the stem, and depressed into the operative position by a rotatable cam 46 acting through a press stud 42 and spring 44. The cam 46 is turned by a finger lever 47 fixed to its shaft 45 and is connected to one end of a Bowden wire 72 the other end of which is conuected to a block 70 on the rod 69 carrying the moistening pad 55. When the cam is turned to allow the spring 52 to raise the roller 39, the wire 72 withdraws the pad against the action of a returning spring 78. (2) The operating levers 47 of the pressure rollers may be normally connected by a disconnectible link so that as one roller is depressed to operative position the other roller is raised into the inoperative position. (3) The carriage supporting the pressure rollers and moistening pads is in two parts connected by a pivot shaft 30 so that one part, 31, may be raised to give ready access to the parts carried thereby and to the printing cylinder 10. (4) The bar or roller 61 for pressing the copy sheet 54 on to the pad 55 is carried by one end of levers 9 pivoted at 56 to the carriage part 31, the other ends of the levers 9 being connected by a bar 57 pressed by a spring 64 into contact with adjustable stops 58 carried by the lugs 50 on the stems 38. The depression 16 in the cylinder 10 which is provided to facilitate the insertion of the copy sheets is formed as a cam adapted, when the cylinder is rotated, to raise the roller 39 and compress the spring 44 so that the roller is resiliently pressed against the cylinder 10 during the printing operation. (5) A stop 79, Figs. 2 and 5 against which the spring 78 abuts and which limits the movement of the pad into the inoperative position, is provided with a number of angular slots to accommodate the rods 69 and is fixed to a rod 80 having an operating handle portion. By moving the rod 80 axially, the stop may be moved clear of a stop pin 82 and then turned upwardly to allow of complete removal of the pads 61. The pads are slidable between guide bars laterally adjustable on the tank 19 and the casings 66 of the pads have portions 67 which, when the pads are moved into the inoperative position, are interposed between the pads and their supply wicks 68 to cut off the supply of fluid to the pads. A finger lever 90 by which the carriage carrying the pads and rollers 39 is advanced step by step across the machine, is adapted to be operated automatically by the engagement with the lever of the end 96 of a lever 92 pivoted at 93 and carrying a roller in the path of a cam 91 on the end of the cylinder 10.
