Abstract

545,549. Glass manufacture. PARFITT, A. W. Nov. 21, 1940, No. 16733. [Class 56] A machine for forming glassware comprises a rotary mould carriage, hydraulically actuated means for displacing the moulds relatively to the carriage during its rotation, and mechanical means for effecting the displacement should the hydraulic means fail to operate. The invention is described in connection with a machine of the Owens type the major operations of which are effected by hydraulically-operated mechanism, as described in Specification 545,548. The parison moulds are carried by dip heads which are raised and lowered, to dip the moulds into the molten glass, by a hydraulic piston motor. The action of the motor 108 is supplemented and positively controlled by mechanical means comprising a cam plate 195 rotated by the motor 114A that rotates the mould carriage. The plate 195 is provided with a cam track 196 which actuates a slide bar 201 connected to a link 204 slidably mounted on the piston rod of the motor 108. The lower end of the piston rod forms a stop to limit the downward movement of the link 204. If the motor 108 fails to lift a dip head, after the parison mould has gathered a charge of glass, the link 204, as it is moved downwards by the cam 196, draws the piston rod downwards and thus ensures that the dip head is raised. The link 204 does not actuate the piston rod in the normal operation of the machine. The sliding connection between the link and the piston rod permits the mechanical means to operate idly when any selected dip head is temporarily locked in its inoperative position. This is effected by mechanism comprising a cam which can be turned by hand into and out of operative position. In the operative position, the cam actuates a valve that prevents the motor 108 from functioning as the mould to be kept open passes the gathering point.
