545,193. Coating surfaces. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Oct. 5, 1940, No. 14909. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1939. [Class 95] [Also in Group IV] Drying-oils are produced by polymerization of a diolefine in an inert hydrocarbon solvent in presence of at least about 4 per cent. of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or hydride thereof at 110-170‹ C. under pressure. Examples describe the polymerization of butadiene, with benzene and of a butadiene-butylene mixture with or without benzene by means of sodium, and of butadiene with benzene by means of sodium hydride. A small proportion of a reactive unsaturated substance such as indene, dihydronaphthalene, chloroprene, styrene, viyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, cyclopentadiene and cyclohexadiene may be added to modify the properties of the product. Solutions of the polymers are suitable for coating purposes, especially those which involve baking, especially as an undercoat; when a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate inter-polymer is employed as a top coat the butadiene polymer solution may have an addition of a small proportion of a methacrylic acid ester such as isobutyl methacrylate to promote adhesion to the top coat. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 gives the lower limit of temperature as 100‹ C. This subject-matter does not appear. in the Specification as accepted.
