[Class 106 (ii)] A gauging device or template for testing the straightness or correctness of contour of metallic surfaces has its testing surface divided into a number of insulated segments each coupled electrically to a signal member such as a lamp for the purpose of indicating whether the several segments are in contact with the workpiece or not. As shown, a number of insulated segments 11 ... 16 are individually connected to a corresponding number of screws 37 and secured as a unit upon a sleeve 31. The unit, when required, may be attached to a stem 40 by a nut 41, the heads of the screws 37 abutting against heads 49 electrically connected by wires 47 and a multiple conductor cable 43, to a corresponding number of lamps arranged in parallel. The trueness of a cylindrical surface, for example, the cylindrical surface of a roller bearing may be tested by applying the surface of the roller bearing to the segments along a directrix, the places of contact and the departure from agreement being indicated by illumination or otherwise of the lamps. In a convenient assembly of the apparatus the segment unit is mounted upon a conducting plate along which the roller bearing is rolled into contact with the segments. In a modified device suitable for testing conical holes each segment is divided into insulated and diametrically-opposed halves the exterior surfaces of the assembly being of conical form. When the assembly is inserted into a conical hole in a conducting material, the opposed halves of the segments are bridged by the conducting material thereby completing the circuits of the correspond lamps, or the halves fail to complete the circuit thus leaving the lamps unilluminated.
